Arctic Monkeys.
I am absolutely in love with Arctic Monkeys’ music and lyrics. Their music’s different from other bands out there right now, though some people think otherwise and can’t actually accept the band’s music. Arctic Monkeys, they rock hard and their music’s so refreshing and new and I love it. Arctic Monkeys is a four piece band from Sheffield and and the lads, they’re about 21 to 22 years old and born and raised in Sheffield. Front man, Alex Turner, even sings in his native (Northern) accent and I have to admit, the first time I listened to “I Bet That You Look Good on The Dance Floor”, I had to listen to it for a few times, and hard, to actually make out what the heck is he singing about (I could not be bothered to Google for their lyrics, at the time). After that, the rest’s history, I was hooked and perhaps, for life.
The band rose from being a newcomer in the music industry to being a household name. Fan base was built on the internet, after they handed out free demo CDs at gigs circa 2003. Their music was put on the web for people to hear. That’s even before they were signed to any record label. The next thing they know, people were singing along to their songs at gigs. They’re perplexed at how such thing is even possible and was wondering, “How the hell did they know??”. Of course, at the time, they had no idea about their Internet fame.
They have just released their second album in April this year, 15 impressive months after the release of their first album “Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not”. Smart move I must say, as the earlier they release a new one, the lower the expectation from the fans they have to satisfy. The second album’s entitled “Favourite Worst Nightmare” and it’s really anything but, nightmare. This album sounds more matured, sometimes softer, sometimes louder and more ambitious compared to the first album, but all in all, in my opinion, the album definitely highlights a very different side of Arctic Monkeys that some might not know of and is acceptable to their fans, including myself.
My favourites out of the new album are 505, Teddy Picker, Do Me a Favour, Old Yellow Bricks, If You Were There, Beware and Fluorescent Adolescent. Truth be told, the last band that I’m this obsessed with is Nirvana and that was about nine to ten years ago. So go and check Arctic Monkeys out ![]()
